ABOUT THE WORK

Sebastien Armure explores the tension—and the attempted reconciliation—within our fragmented experience of space and time. His work reflects the various states we inhabit: the physical here and now, the flicker of memory, a dream resurfaced, shifting emotional undercurrents, or the imagined pull of what is not yet here. In search of a fragile point of alignment, he layers elements of personal and collective memory, imagination, traces of emotion, and embodied presence.

This reflection on fragmentation also touches on how we perceive our own presence—between interiority and exteriority, between what is revealed and what remains hidden.

Formally, the pieces are articulated through fundamental elements of painting: the surface—often reflective—the frame, and the stretchers, evoked through wood, all becoming raw materials for composition.

References to furniture and architecture further this inquiry, questioning how we inhabit, define, and inscribe ourselves into space.

The work retains traces of this dialogue between the self and the world: those left by a gesture—a mark of paint, a broken or engraved surface, or a cast imprint of the body. These quiet witnesses of presence speak to the complexity of relating to oneself and to others.

Geometric forms emerge, evoking crystals, constellations, or the simplified form of a body in space.

The reflective surface, recurring throughout the work, recalls the mirror and its essential role in the tradition of self-portraiture. It becomes both a representation of the self and a meditation on the act of seeing. Thus, the work seems complete only for a fleeting moment, when the onlooker encounters themselves.
